Propulsion Systems Engineer

Function

As a Propulsion Systems Engineer, you support Research, Development & Innovation (RDI) projects, proposals, and engineering programs as a subject-matter expert. You work on vessel propulsion, mechanical, and auxiliary systems across the full project lifecycle, from concept design to production support and trials.

You perform trade-off studies and optimize system designs in early project phases. During detailed engineering and research, you use tools such as MATLAB/Simulink to analyse system performance, support technical decisions, and reduce risk. Your work is validated using operational ship data, and you actively evaluate and introduce new technologies within your field.

Specific duties in this role include:

  • Serve as a technical specialist in RDI projects, engineering programs, and proposals.
  • Analyse and optimize propulsion, mechanical, and auxiliary systems.
  • Perform simulations, trade-off studies, and risk assessments.
  • Develop and validate models using MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Support testing and validation activities (FAT, HAT, SAT).
  • Ensure designs meet technical requirements, standards, and specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineers, research partners, and project teams.
  • Apply and promote new technologies in propulsion and mechanical systems.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree with at least 7 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience, in a technical discipline.
  • In-depth knowledge of propulsion, mechanical, and auxiliary systems for naval vessels or offshore installations.
  • Experience working on complex Shipbuilding or offshore engineering projects in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Experience with research and development activities; academic research experience is a strong advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with simulation and validation of engineering models.
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English. Dutch language skills are a strong asset.
